Mystifying MLB On TBS Schedule

The Sunday afternoon MLB on TBS package is mystifying because we can't figure out how they're going to be successful with this thing.
.
TBS games are not exclusive. Both teams can and will televise the game to their regular markets.
.
ESPN Sunday Night and FOX Saturday games are exclusive broadcasts.
.
TBS can not change the start time of a game to a window with potentially higher ratings.
.
ESPN dictates Sunday Night start times (usually 8:00 PM EST). FOX dictates Saturday start times (usually 3:55 PM EST).
.
TBS does not have camera position priorities over the local rightsholders.
.
ESPN, on weeknight games, gets camera priority over local rightsholders in select positions including those adjacent to each dugout.
.
So what's the hook that will get people to tune in?
.
Like we said, mystifying.
.
Chip Caray will handle the play by play with analysts to be named later. Joe Simpson, Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken, Bob Brenly and Steve Stone worked for TBS during last year's playoffs. If Stone returns, hopefully he will do a little more homework than he appeared to have done last fall.
.
TBS has made their game selections through Memorial Day Weekend. All times Eastern.
.
April 6
Boston Red Sox @ Toronto Blue Jays
1:00 PM
.
April 13
Chicago Cubs @ Philadelphia Phillies
1:30 p.m.
.
April 20
LA Dodgers @ Atlanta Braves
1:30 p.m.
.
April 27
NY Yankees @ Cleveland Indians
1:00 p.m.
.
May 4
NY Mets @ Arizona Diamondbacks
4:00 p.m.
.
May 11
NY Yankees @ Detroit Tigers
1:00 p.m.
.
May 18
Milwaukee Brewers @ Boston Red Sox
1:30 p.m.
.
May 25
Seattle Mariners @ NY Yankees
1:00 p.m.

.
Hopefully TBS' coverage in 2008 will be better received than it was in 2007.
.
Even if it is though, we'll always miss the SuperStation WTBS era and gems like this:
.

Thanks to TVARK

Yes, Chris, we get it, you know people in TV sports.
Guess what? So do the rest of us.
Your name-dropping, look-at-me I'm STAGE MANAGING A GAME! website is a joke.

You can't really be in TV or you would understand that TBS took the Sunday games in order to have the postseason.
Just like Fox took a huge loss on the NFL early on in order to build prestige for the rest of the network (primetime, etc).

@Anonymous,

What in the world did I ever do to you to deserve your nasty, spineless comment(because you post anonymously without a name)?

If you took the time to look at the site as a whole to understand why it is there and what we are trying to provide, I would hope you would have a different view. Perhaps you could even make some CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions.

Because guess what? You are in the minority based on the feedback I am getting from visitors to the site. So if you want to have a real conversation about it, feel free to drop me an email.

Oh, and this site is great! I just wish I knew who the people behind it are to tell them that personally.

Obviously the initial TBS contract consists of one package of 26 Sundays and all Division Series games, but that doesn't mean one was absolutely tied to the other during negotiations. If MLB was so intent on creating another national window, why didn't they even attempt to give TBS any of the latitudes that a Wednesday ESPN B-NET game got 15 years ago?

The only consession TBS got was no blackouts in local markets. But do you really think they will put a dent in the local rightsholders' ratings if TBS has nothing to offer those fans other than Chip Caray? At least ESPN could give you shots of the dugouts from their low cams. TBS will have to spend the money for robos to accomplish the same thing. Good for Fletcher anyway.

If anything, the Sunday package dilutes MLB's Extra Innings package they have already sold to cable & satellite operators, who didn't take kindly when the NFL put the Patriots-Giants season finale on free TV.

No, Christopher...the purpose of your site is to pat yourself on the back...oh, *I* got Sun Sports to fix their web site, *I* will send an email to ESPN and ask why Mike Gleason had to work with a bad graphic. Yeah, I'm sure they'll get right back to you. And when the 3-network Pats-Giants story broke, *I* will get to the bottom of this with Seth Palansky. Yeah, ok, go scoop AP and try to impress everyone on sportsjournalists.com that you have email addresses that probably 90% of the folks who post there have as well.
Also, don't call me out on being anonymous when you says things like:

Unfortunately, Eye on Sports Media did not have a camera at the game to capture that moment.
Shouldn't that say I? Have to refer to yourself in third person? And you alway say we'll get to the bottom of it? Split personality? More than one Christopher Byrne posts?
I do look at your site. CBS execs bios posted for some inexplicable reason, I guess since you've known them a long time ago, that justifies it even if you never explain it. Sounds like you're just someone who thought they were a big-level network type at one point.

@Anonymous,

As I said in my earlier reply, if you would like to have a discussion via email, or in a public forum where you post with a real name, I will be more than happy to.

For you most recent comments:

"oh, *I* got Sun Sports to fix their web site, *I* will send an email to ESPN and ask why Mike Gleason had to work with a bad graphic. Yeah, I'm sure they'll get right back to you."

If you would like copies of the emails received back from these two organizations on these specific issues, I will gladly share them with you. The fact is that most people will not let a web site owner know when there are problems or errors. They would rather complain and moan about them, but do nothing to help or fix them.

And when the 3-network Pats-Giants story broke, *I* will get to the bottom of this with Seth Palansky. Yeah, ok, go scoop AP and try to impress everyone on sportsjournalists.com that you have email addresses that probably 90% of the folks who post there have as well.

I made the mistake of responding in that forum in a conversational manner, because I had already been exchanging e-mails with Seth that morning before that story broke (and before I saw the disclaimer that no further comment would be made). Again, I will gladly provide you with a copy of those as well. I learn from my mistakes as this has been a new venture for me and our company, and I adjust.

I do look at your site. CBS execs bios posted for some inexplicable reason, I guess since you've known them a long time ago, that justifies it even if you never explain it. Sounds like you're just someone who thought they were a big-level network type at one point.

If you knew me personally, you would know how absurd this statement is.

The profiles are not inexplicable. If you look at the top right section of the site you will see this:

One of the goals of Eye on Sports Media is to give you information and stories about the executives that make the decisions about what you see, when you see it, and where you see it. Every network we have talked to, except one, has recognized the value of this information to you and provided us with the biographies and headshots you see here.

By doing this, when content is posted about someone who's profile is part of the site, the link to the profile is automatically created so people can find out more about the people included in the stories/posts.

There are more than CBS Exec's profiles posted. You will find Big Ten Network, ESPN, MSG and others. This is a work in progress as we (I/our company) are trying to make this information available for people who are looking for it. And guess what? They are, and I can show you the search logs if you would like that as well.

It is also not just executive profiles. Talent profiles and production staff profiles are posted as well. The challenge is, on the blogger platform, easily updating them (e.g. when Brando and Fouts got let go by ESPN, going back and updating their profiles (not done yet)). I cannot wait until I have the new application platform for the site completed,

Again, I do not know why you have to direct your venom like this. If you do not think the site is any good and have no use for it, that is fine. But I balance that against the network execs, producers, SID's and regular old fans who have communicated directly with me as to what they have found useful on the site, and suggestions they have made to improve it. And guess what, these are people I have never met.

Have you even seen the college basketball TV schedule posted that you cannot find in a similar format anywhere? No this is not about patting myself on the back, it is about an information resource that thousands of people have accessed because it is as complete as it can get and contains all of the networks,

In your first comment, you wrote:

Your name-dropping, look-at-me I'm STAGE MANAGING A GAME! website is a joke.

I am wondering if you know how to maximize Google page rankings? You include references and names that are relevant to what is being posted. If I have a conversation with someone or interview someone, yes the names get included. Not for "name-dropping" purposes, but to have the referential content for readers.

"Look at me"? Again, whether I am filling a role doing talent stats, official stats, stage manager, AD, or whatever, it is to give context if and when I am live blogging or semi-live blogging from an event.

So my challenge to you is to stop being a spineless wimp like 98% of the media professionals/posters on sportsjournalists.com who hide behind fake names and have a real conversation.

My apologies to the folks that run this blog for having to use their space on it.

Well, Christopher...
You said if you ever got an email back from ESPN, you'd post what they said. You didn't. You lied.
Also, you keep saying our site, we, etc. Is your site more than person or not?
And oh, no, I don't read your college basketball schedule because I care less what's on except the 4-5 games per week I work.
Look, you lost me earlier in the fall with your whining about not doing CBS football anymore. Things change in this business, deal with it.

Christopher Byrne said...

@Anonymous,

Oh good Lord, because I just got his permission to repost it a day or two ago and I had not gotten to it yet means I lied? No it means I am juggling four customers this week that have had hard deadlines (you know, the work that pays the bills).

and talking about not doing it (the CBS games) anymore is not whining. Yes things change and I do deal with it.:-)

As far as the site, it is run through a business, which is a LLC Partnership. Perhaps that will become more evident as the site is grown, refined and shaped. There are a couple of people who have expressed interest in writing content for it, I just need to remind them and see if they are still interested.

Keep in mind that you may not be interested in the schedule because you are working your games. But others are, so there is something for everyone.

So in the interest of world peace, I invite you to put the past aside and look at it with fresh eyes. Constructive suggestions and comments are always welcome. Things change, right?

And I still want to know who you are!;-)
